The Eye Drop cinema, a joint project of the artist and the curator Jakub Adamec, is a space for regular film projections and artists’ presentations, and it is also a peaceful oasis for relaxation and self-reflection. It will present works by visual artists and experimental films, as well as art and film club production. A cinema is not a standard gallery facility, and it offers an important expansion of the possibilities of the presentation of artworks which require longer concentration and specific technical conditions.

“The Polish visual artist Zuza Golińska who is responsible for the Eye Drop cinema project centres on installations and site-specific projects exploring different forms of social structures and types, and the use of space. Her works examine the relations between people, the public space and architecture, the interaction between society and the world around us. Her installations include fine details which, however, are precisely targeted, the result being a clear message.

The Eye Drop space is best suited for evening projections, and during the day it can serve as a shelter or a contemplation zone. From a monumental space we move into a more intimate one, with more emphasis on horizontality. The primary idea of the architectural design was loosely based on an opium den, i.e. a place dominated by a horizontal layout instead of the usual verticals. A platform covered with a carpet, islands with mattresses and other soft objects invite you to lie down. The body becomes more passive while the soul and the brain are activated, and the surroundings give you space to know yourself.

The cinema mediates the now-omnipresent phenomenon of moving pictures. A film as a synthetic medium brings together almost all art disciplines. The fact that films have the power to change the world holds more true than with other art forms. Our responsibility lies in the fact that we believe in the power of art and thinking. And Zuza Golińska’s Eye Drop offers a very specific manner of how to enhance their effect.“

Eye Drop

In the Universe, there is a world;
in that world there is a town;
in that town there is a neighbourhood;
in that neighbourhood there is a street;
in that street, there is a building;
in that building there is a space;
in that space there is cinema;
in that cinema there is a platform;
on that platform there is a carpet;
on that carpet there is a bed;
on that bed there is a mattress;

Based on children’s song from the region of Les Deux-Sèvres* (France) and my mom’s way of scaring her younger brother when there were kids. Her version started with:

“In the dark, dark forest there is a dark, dark house;

in this dark, dark room there is (…)”

Zuza Golińska

Zuza Golińska (*1990, Gdańsk, PL) graduated from the Studio of Spatial Activities of Mirosław Bałka at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She creates installations and site-specific projects that often explore the concepts of social structures and the public space. She has presented her works, for example, in the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw, the Delfina Foundation in London and in the National Gallery in Prague. In 2015-2018 she worked as assistant in the Studio of Spatial Activities led by Mirosław Bałka. She is the winner of ArtePrize awarded by the ArteVue foundation, and in 2018 was a resident of the Delfina Foundation, London. She lives and works in Warsaw.
