Lecture:
We'll take a humorous and serious look together at the topic of animal liberation and environmental radicalism in the comic book genre.
How did the conflict between Spider-Man and the Animal Liberation Front end? Why does Bobík Pig eat pork and Donald Duck eat duck meat? And how does comics help and hurt green and animal activism?
Martin Tománek is involved in critical pedagogy, has been vegan over 14 years and is a co-founding member of the SdruŽeny collective, where he is involved in activism, organising feminist conferences and lecturing. He analyses ideologies in pop culture in a light-hearted way in his podcast Red Nerds. As a comic columnist he contributes to the magazines Lógr, Glosolália and Kapitál. When Martin and his brother Adam were in their teens, they created a punk zine about how eating meat and drinking alcohol led to the destruction of our civilization. For the current exhibition at PLATO, the Tománek brothers created a comic book, which they defined in terms of genre as folk horror.
